Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women and is second only to lung cancer in deaths. The most proven and significant risk factors are being female and getting older. In an effort to educate Bexar County residents, the San Antonio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has implemented an extensive Education and Outreach program to educate and raise awareness among all families in Bexar County. Education has helped raise awareness of breast cancer, the importance of screening and early detection, and the need for more research. Early detection allows the best chance for a cure and offers more treatment options. When breast cancer is detected early and confined to the breast, the 5-year survival rate is over 95%.
